Peyton & Skip From walking with support to cantering with confidence

When Peyton (P) and Skip first joined Heels Down Club in February 2026, P had experienced a huge knock to her confidence. She only wanted to walk, found trotting extremely daunting, and would only trot if a trusted person was walking alongside her.

Through regular attendance at Heels Down Club, P and Skip steadily rebuilt that confidence. Their favourite part of each session was the Gymkhana games, which are carefully designed to develop balance, steering, transitions, and control in a fun, pressure-free environment. Without even realising it, P was becoming more secure, more independent, and more confident at changing pace.

Alongside their Heels Down lessons, P and Skip regularly attended their local riding club. They began competing in in-hand classes, before progressing to ridden classes over the summer—a huge milestone that once seemed out of reach.

Before I took my autumn break, P and Skip completed their final lesson by practising their show piece. What had once been unthinkable was now second nature—they confidently rode it in walk, trot, canter, and even finished with a gallop!

In July, P and Skip took that confidence to TOYS, where they achieved 3rd place in the In-Hand class and 5th out of 10 in their First Ridden class, performing a fantastic canter show piece along the way.

P's journey is a wonderful reminder that confidence isn't built overnight. With patience, consistency, and the right support, riders can achieve far more than they ever believed possible.

"Confidence grows when success is built one small step at a time. At Heels Down Club, we don't just teach children to ride, we help them believe they can." Polly, HDC
